ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Fals (Bronze, 19 mm, 2.90 g, 3 h), ‘Standing Caliph’ type, Hims (Emesa), circa AH 74-80 / AD 693-700. Within a dotted circle, caliph standing facing, bearded, placing his right hand on the hilt of his sword; to right and left, ‘li ʿabd Allah ʿAbd al-Malik – amīr al-muʾminīn’ (‘For the servant of Allah, Abd al-Malik, Commander of the Believers’ in Arabic). Rev. Within a dotted circle, transformed cross on four steps; to left and right, ‘ḍuriba – bi Ḥimṣ’ (‘Struck in Hims’ in Arabic); around, ‘lā ilāha illā [Allāh waḥdahū Mu]ḥamma[d] rasūl Allāh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah, the One.
